Term: Summer 2
Topic: All Aboard
In Year 2 our Summer 2 topic is called 'All Aboard'. We will be focusing on reading the book 'The Owl and the Pussycat' which is the tale of the journey of two friends travelling along the ocean. We will be writing a letter to the Pussycat and also completing our very own version of the story. In maths we will be focusing on consolidating our understanding of number using strategies that we have learnt throughout Year 2. During our topic lessons we will be constructing our own bridges enabling us to find out the most suitable material to use. This half terms educational visit will be over at Norbury Junction, where we will get the chance to hop onto a boat and have a 'whale' of a time!

Term: Summer 1
Topic: Knights and Castles
In summer term 1, our topic is 'Knights and Castles'. During our topic we will be focusing on the story 'George and the Dragon'. We will be researching all about Queen Victoria and creating our very our biography of her life. We will be finding out about different castles that exist in the UK and around the world, we might even go on an Educational Visit to Stafford Castle and dress up as Knights. In English we will be writing our own version of the story and creating a new character to fit into the book. We will also be doing lots of SPaG practise ready for our SATS. During Maths we will be looking at a range of number reasoning problems, practising our sharing using division and looking at the relationship between division and multiplication.

Term: Spring 2
Topic: Back to Nature
The topic for this half term is 'Back to Nature'. During this topic we will concentrate on looking at animals and their habitats, in particular nocturnal animals. Children will need to construct the habitat for one of these animals in design and technology. In Science we will be focusing on different habitats, why and how certain animals survive in certain conditions. In art we will look at different objectives in nature that we can use to create repeated patterns and sketch a variety of different nocturnal animals. In geography and history children will be looking at the natural and man made land uses in the area along with the impact of changes to the land use on us as residents to an area. Whilst in history we will look at this aspect of how through time the land use has changed and why over the years. Finally, we will listen to a variety of animals that live in the wild and try and discuss the sounds you hear, then recreate these sounds using instruments.

Topic: The Selfish Giant
In Spring term 1, our topic is 'The Selfish Giant'. During our topic we will be focusing on this story. We will be researching all about growing and the life cycle of a plant. We will also be looking at researching about significant people from Stoke-on-Trent such as; Robbie Williams, Emma Bridgewater and Captain John Smith.
In English we will writing our own instructions to plant a flower using lots of different language. We will also be looking at something new, poetry and funny rhymes linking to our story of 'The Selfish Giant'.
During Maths we will be looking at securing our understanding about addition and subtraction by introducing using the column method. We will also be looking at symmetry and 3D shape.

Term: Autumn 2
Topic: Winter Babies
In Autumn term 2 our topic is 'Winter Babies'. During our topic we will be focusing on a story called 'The little polar bear and the big balloon'. We will be researching all about polar bears living in the Arctic, what they like to eat and their habitats. In science we will be looking at what humans and animals need to survive. In English we will writing our very own non-chronological report about polar bears and then researching to write about 'Lars' friend 'Yuki' the puffin. We will also be writing a recount of the little polar bear's journey. During Maths we will be looking at money and doubling we will even get to have ago at making our very own shop and playing shop keeper.
Autumn 1 Newsletter
Term: Autumn 1
In Autumn term 1 our topic is 'Superheroes'. During our topic we will be focusing on a story called 'Traction Man'. We will be researching all about real life superheroes, one being Florence Nightingale. We will be looking at what her life was like and why she was a real life superhero.
In English we will be perfecting our sentence writing by making sure that we are using finger spaces, capital letters and full stops, we will also be making our writing extra exciting by adding amazing adjectives. During Maths we will be focusing our laser beams on securing our knowledge of number, applying addition and subtraction. Year 2 are definitely superhero ready!
